In 2018 I made the decision to leave the corporate world behind and start my own notary business. The decision was a long process. I had wanted to this for some time, but the challenges seemed insurmountable. I knew I wouldn’t make money right out of the gate so how would I pay my bills? I had a nice, steady paycheck with incredible benefits. It seemed crazy to leave that financial security behind and venture out on my own. Yet still I had this burning desire to do just that! I wanted autonomy, freedom to make my own choices about my life, to make my own schedule, and to make my life what I want it to be.
I think the tipping point came for me when I realized that by working for someone else, I was helping to make their dreams come true, not my own. That hit me hard! We only get one shot at this life and I decided I was going to spend the rest of mine on my own terms. I withdrew some money from my 401k to help supplement my income until my business was up and running. I am sure there are financial planners cringing at the thought of that, but I think it’s the smartest thing I have ever done and don’t regret it for a second.
As anticipated, my business was not an overnight success. No surprise there! However, I am a hard worker and spent my time working on different marketing strategies and honing my craft. Some things I tried worked and others didn’t. It was all a learning experience though. Now I know what not to do! I have finally entered a phase in my business where I am experiencing some degree of success and boy does it feel good! The stress, worry and hard work are all paying off. I am so glad I ventured out on my own. The thought of owning my own notary business was scary, but worth it!
